A shoulder seal quart embossed on the front: "MASONS PATENT NOV 30TH 1858" and on the reverse side with a large "HGCo" monogram, for Hemingray Glass Co. The jar was blown in 1877 at Hemingray's Covington, KY glass plant site, from their patented Black Glass (opaque olive black). This particular example is the finest we've seen, with good strong embossing, and displaying an excessive amount of seed bubbles throughout, that are visible at the surface all over the jar. Also is crudely fashioned with some great character in that the body is not perfectly round. Shiny condition with no damage or stains, other than flaking around the ground mouth as shown. Base: "10". We sold this jar originally in the year 2000 in the dispersal of a fine Southern NJ collection, and it has now returned to the market. An outstanding piece of early Hemingray glassware.
