Availability: Extremely Rare. (revised 4/15/2017) This may be the only known example with an original lid. On March 13, 1866 Josee Johnson of New York City, NY was granted a patent for an improved fruit jar. View the patent here. As illustrated in the patent, the ends of the clamp are tapered to a sharp edge to serve a secondary function for use as a pry bar to release the seal on the lid. The clamp is a very well made steel reproduction based on the patent drawing. This rare jar is from the collection of Mr Jan Hall.
