An aqua quart embossed on the front with a pictorial Union Shield with stars and stripes encircled by: "NATIONAL PRESERVE CAN" and on the reverse side with a pictorial Anchor figure with intertwined rope and encircled by: "EARLES PATENT FEB 2nd 1864". A beautiful example with strong embossing and sparkling glass that displays a nice light whittled effect (rarely seen in this series, as most examples are slick, smooth, and lightly embossed). Unembossed slightly domed glass lid with a flat center platform to engage the clamp. The clamp is made entirely of iron (including the coiled spring), and has an old deep patina. The unmarked clamp appears to the eye as an original, and was sold in the past as original, but be aware that the originals are normally considered to have a brass spring. No condition issues other than typical minor flaking of the ground mouth. Base: unmarked. A fantastic example of this highly-appealing early jar.
