Size: MIDGET PINT
Color: AQUAMARINE
Closure: unlined zinc cap "TRADE MARK ALWAYS RELIABLE SMSCo" with tall side lug
Appearance: shiny glass
Condition: Has a very thin chip on the heel as shown, and there is a small reflective ding within the glass on the right shoulder as shown. Excellent ground lip with very little flaking.
Embossing: strong
Base: perfectly flat base is unmarked
Age: c1858
Availability: Extremely rare, only a handful of these are known. This version, with MASONS embossed in a straight line instead of an arch, is considered to be the very first in the so-called "Crowleytown" series of Mason style jars and the first to employ John Mason's patented screw cap. The sharply-squared heel shape was an overlooked design flaw in these earliest jars, which led to many examples incurring heel damage during normal use.
