Size: THREE PINT SIZE
Color: AQUAMARINE
Closure: missing top
Appearance: shiny
Condition: the wax ring is missing
Strength of embossing: strong
Base: open pontil scar
Age: c1860
Availability: Scarce early jar. The phenomenon with this series of figural barrel jars whereby the wax ring is sheared off cleanly at the top of the neck is often misunderstood. These jars are sometimes sold as having been made this way, but that's probably not correct. The mouth more likely broke off in use, owing to the weak circumference area around the bend of the neck, which was generated in the manufacturing process. I suspect the jars were kept by their original owners even after having been broken, because they could still be used for storage purposes. The remaining artifact is an interesting display piece or a conversation piece.
