DESCRIPTION

A pint size solid pour casting from a MASONS PATENT NOV 30TH 1858 mold. A routine procedure undertaken at the beginning of a glass-house work shift was to drop a gather of molten glass into the cast iron mold in order to heat the mold to working temperature for production use. Often the mold was only partially filled. However in this case the mold was filled all the way to the level of the top of the blow-over. Normally though, the resulting glass casting would have been recycled back into the glass pot. This one, for whatever reason, was kept or discarded, intact. This artifact was recently dug near the grounds of the Marion Fruit Jar & Bottle Co plant site here in Indiana, and was most likely made there. Note the large serified "1" on the base.

Very few Masons 1858 "solid pours" are known to exist, and a full pour casting from a pint mold is even more rare. A solid manufacturer's provenance adds to the significance of this one. Part of the blow-over is still in place as shown, the rest is sheared off. Weighs almost 4 lbs. A fantastic type of rarity which has very seldom been seen for sale.
