An aqua 4-gallon promotional jar made for display at the Philadelphia Centennial Expostion of 1876. Embossed on one side: "MASONS IMPROVED CFJCo", and on the other side: "MANUFACTURED AT THE WHITNEY GLASS WORKS GLASSBORO, NJ". Very bold embossing and nice glass character with no damage outside of one exception. There is a ding in the mouth as shown. Original massive glass lid with CFJCo monogram, and a replica metal band made by Phil Robinson. The base of the jar is embossed: "PATENTED MAY 10TH 1870". Measures 18-1/2 inches tall overall, and 8-1/2 inches in diameter. A fantastic old piece, and one of only 2 known from this mold with Improved closure.
From the Philip Robinson Museum Collection.
